Welcome back to the blog, so happy to have you here. Today’s blog is a bit different than my normal fashion content. Today we’re talking all about blogging and influencing, specifically influencer giveaways. If you’re reading this you are probably a blogger or influencer looking to grow your following on Instagram. Congratulations, it takes a lot of gumption to go this route. I always want to be here for my followers as a source of honesty and wisdom. When I blog about things I’ve used or tips that I know, I want it to be from a place of genuine knowledge and trust.
What’s an influencer giveaway?
Let’s start by defining what I mean when I say “influencer giveaway.” You might have gotten dm’s about this kind of thing before. Someone messaging you saying they have spots available in the latest giveaway for -insert prize here-, claiming you’ll gain thousands of followers. All you have to do is pay -x amount of money- for a spot and watch the followers roll in. Sounds too good to be true? Maybe. But it is an option.
I don’t want to disparage all giveaways. I do think they are a fun way to boost your following and attract a new audience. They do work for people and have worked a bit for me, but there are some major downsides as well. I want to talk a bit about both sides of the coin, positive and negative sides of influencer giveaways.
My Experience with Influencer Giveaways
Personally, I’ve participated in two separate influencer giveaways myself. I have never participated in one from a random DM on Instagram but did use my resources to find a few giveaways to participate in. At this point, I found myself in a place where I had enough blogging budget to join a small giveaway with an estimated follower total of maybe 1,000 to 3,000 to start out.
I was a bit hesitant to try something like this. I subscribe to the wisdom that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never the less, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see if it could really boost my following as much as the offer claimed. The small gain giveaway actually did lend me some good results. I gained about 1,500 followers from that giveaway and was really happy with those results. That was the most follower gain I had seen since June 2019 when the algorithm changed and Instagram got crazy. I was enticed and got greedy like gamblers do. I thought, a bigger giveaway would lend me even more followers and I would finally hit my goal of 10K followers on Instagram. Oh the best laid plans…
The second giveaway I participated in offered a gain of 2,000 to 6,000 followers. This of course came at a higher price, but I was still so tempted to see if I could get to my goal. As the giveaway kicked off I saw instant results. I was gaining followers by the hundreds daily and my account quickly rose. I did my best to keep up with Instagram as much as I could to retain the followers I was getting. Trying my best to show off my personality and make them want to stay after the giveaway was over. The final day I woke up and saw that beautiful 10k number. I was so ecstatic, my goal had been reached. But quickly, I saw just how fleeting this type of follower gain can be. My account stopped growing, followers began to drop off and my 10k goal was no more.
Positives of Influencer Giveaways
Giveaways can be a valuable option if you have the means and want to quickly grow your Instagram following. They are easy to find, enter and get you immediate results if they’re good. In a way, I kind of think of this like paid advertising. It’s a way to get your account shown to a really wide audience. Top tier giveaways can even give you insights as to the demographic of the audience to see if it is a match for your brand. I don’t want to shame giveaways but I do think it is important to keep your expectations in check. Which brings us to…
Negatives of Influencer Giveaways
In my opinion, these giveaways can come with a few more negatives than positives. First, it can be a challenge to find quality giveaways that will deliver what they promise. Some giveaways don’t provide you with an estimate of potential follower growth or demographics for the audience. Personally, I think you should stay away from offers that don’t provide you with that data. Secondly, just because you gain the followers, doesn’t mean they’ll stick around. Some people just scour Instagram in search of any giveaway they can win. Those kind of people aren’t the ones you want to attract or could make stick around for anything besides a prize.
Finally, these giveaways can be very costly, not just with your money but with your mental health. This might just be me, but I found it really overwhelming to suddenly gain so many followers in such a short period of time. My brain was in constant overdrive trying to thing of ways to engage and keep the followers I was getting. If you are going to participate in these kinds of giveaways, be sure that you’re ready. Don’t let the sudden attention overwhelm you. Just be yourself, and the right people will stay.
A really talented blogger I know by the name of Mck Who wrote a really compelling blog about influencer giveaways as well. She came at it from more of a money standpoint and is definitley worth a read if you want more information on this subject.
